Chronology

April 2001: DB flies me to Las Vegas and decides I’m the guy to do his treasure hunt. Everything is “rush, rush, rush” for publishing in late October. BK says he will “call me.”

April 2002: BK calls me. DB starts working on book as he trains for Vertigo at 2451 Laurel Canyon Blvd. Everything is “rush, rush, rush” for publishing in late October. I emphasize that we need to know yesterday where the treasure will be buried, for every other part of the treasure hunt is built upon that foundation.

September 4, 2002: DB decides where to hide his treasure. Where else? 2451 Laurel Canyon Blvd. where he also shot the introduction for his “Fearless” DVD. At this point, I have only three weeks to complete the puzzle and deliver it to Random House.

October 29, 2002: The book is published. While awaiting the placement of the treasure map and amulet, a laminated card is hidden at the treasure location.

February 21, 2003: The treasure is finally hidden at the treasure location: a $10,000 gold orb inside a hollow stone. The treasure map and amulet described in the rules become fiction.

November 5, 2003: The Larry King clue is released. I’m convinced that the Challenge will be solved by week’s end.

March 20, 2004: The Challenge is solved by a newcomer who’s only worked on the puzzle for six weeks, neither owning a copy of the book nor a copy of the “Fearless” video.
